What We Do

Prenatal Consults

The prenatal period is the best time to prepare for breastfeeding. Benefits of breastfeeding, skin-to-skin holding and desired bonding behaviors are taught. The transition to motherhood is facilitated by anticipating what happens during labor and delivery as well as what to expect during the first hours after delivery. Infant cues, states and behaviors are taught to help you understand your baby. Sometimes things don’t go as expected so I teach the technique of hand expression for colostrum collection and pumping strategies. The beauty of the home visit is that you will be able practice various breastfeeding positions using all your senses in the comfort of your home. I use a demo doll and breast models to teach correct latch and positioning. Awareness of the complications of pregnancy, mental health issues and other physiological changes such as edema and breast anatomy are addressed as they may impact breastfeeding.

Postpartum Consults

Postpartum danger signs are taught with instructions to consult with your OB/GYN as needed. Assessments of the breast and infant along with latch and positioning are conducted with the goal of making modifications that optimize breastfeeding success. I collaborate with other healthcare professionals when treating complicated nipple injury cases, breast infections and anatomical anomalies discovered during the maternal/infant assessment. Weight checks and milk transfer are determined using a reliable digital weight scale. I use my expertise in nutrition to teach postpartum nutrition. This is also an exciting time to learn about infant growth and development and ways to apply what you learned about understanding infant cues and behaviors. Referrals to mental health resources are provided as needed.

Back to Work Consults/Weaning

Discussions focus on pumping strategies, readiness for solid food, paced bottle feeding and baby-led/mother-led weaning strategies. Laws related to breastfeeding and the workforce are taught.
