Nurse Miriam

Hello. I am Miriam T. Zimuto an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Registered Nurse, Nutritionist/Clinical Dietitian and founder of Breastmade LLC. I graduated from Hunter College of City University of New York with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition and Food Science. I am also a graduate of Rutgers University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.

For over 25 years my career path has been inseparable from community work which enabled me to network with other healthcare professionals. Earlier on in my career I served pregnant women and their families as a Public Health Nutritionist and Clinical Dietitian. I was responsible for providing nutrition education and promoting breastfeeding. As an avid advocate for breastfeeding, I am proud to have been an integral team player of collaborative initiatives implemented to increase breastfeeding rates in New York and Northern New Jersey.

As a registered nurse my most influential position has been that of Nurse Home Visitor. My role is to educate first time pregnant women to help them achieve positive pregnancy outcomes. I remain available to them until their children reach the age of two. Most women boast of achieving positive outcomes due to their adherence to best practices taught. My sound clinical judgement, reliance on evidence-based research and a strong nutrition background have helped me guide families in the right direction.

Mothers can be met anywhere along their breastfeeding journeys but research has shown that best health outcomes result from best practices initiated during the prenatal period. Sound prenatal, breastfeeding and nutrition education along with access to the right type of support are the blue print for successful breastfeeding. During my breastfeeding journey I was fortunate to have had the support of my mother who successfully breastfed four children, including myself, and a passionate and knowledgeable midwife. My hope is that by serving mothers in the comfort of their homes I will be able to help them succeed at breastfeeding.

My home visiting business will provide services that include but are not limited to assessing and correcting latch, positioning, performing breast exams, assessing nipple issues and sore nipples, oral-motor assessments, weight checks, growth and development screenings, nutrition education, pumping strategies, paced-bottle feeding, and alternative feeding methods. For collaborative care, each visit will be concluded with the development of an individualized care plan. A report will be shared with the health care provider and family.

Mission statement

The work of breastfeeding is important. My mission is to facilitate achievement of breastfeeding goals with the hope that success is met with a desire to help others so together we can build healthy families, communities and ultimately contribute to a cleaner environment and healthier societies.
